{"id":1383,"date":"2019-06-01T14:33:31","date_gmt":"2019-06-01T14:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/bitcows.com\/?p=1383"},"modified":"2024-05-10T18:11:06","modified_gmt":"2024-05-10T18:11:06","slug":"making-a-kali-live-bootable-usb-mac-mojave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/bitcows.com\/?p=1383","title":{"rendered":"Making a Kali Live Bootable USB Mac Mojave"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Get a Defcon sticker!<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ebay.com\/itm\/143354151945\" target=\"new\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bitcows.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/defcon.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1988\" height=\"514\" style=\"border:2px solid black\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1503\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nIf you are one of the thousands (or millions I don&#8217;t know) of nerds out there who have a Mac and want to install Kali live on your MacBook running <strong>Mojave<\/strong> then this article is for you.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bitcows.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2019-06-01-at-7.09.53-AM-1024x582.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1390\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Requirements<\/h3>\n<p>Mac (duh)<br \/>\nUSB thumb drive<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.kali.org\/downloads\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kali ISO<\/a> (Kali Linux 64-Bit)<\/p>\n<h3>Step One<\/h3>\n<p>Download Kali ISO for this i used the Kali Linux 64-Bit version.<\/p>\n<h3>Step Two<\/h3>\n<p>Without the USB drive plugged into the system, open a Terminal window, and type the command <code>diskutil list<\/code> at the command prompt<br \/>\nYou will get a list of the device paths (looking like \/dev\/rdisk0, \/dev\/rdisk1, etc.) of the disks mounted on your system, along with information on the partitions on each of the disks.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bitcows.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2019-06-01-at-7.16.38-AM-1024x433.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1396\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Plug in your USB device to your Mac and run the command <code>diskutil list<\/code> a second time. You should now see a new path listed. In this example, you can see that there is now a \/dev\/disk2 which wasn\u2019t previously present.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bitcows.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2019-06-01-at-7.19.46-AM-1024x531.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This new path will be the path you need to use.<\/p>\n<h3>Step Three<\/h3>\n<p>Now you will need to unmount your USB device in order to install the ISO.<br \/>\n<b>NOTE:!!! the path to your disk might be different than this one so use the one you got from diskutil list<\/b><br \/>\n<code>diskutil unmountDisk \/dev\/disk2<\/code><\/p>\n<p>Before flashing your drive make sure you are in the same directory as your ISO file unless you want to add a path to it. In this example I&#8217;m in the same folder so no long path is needed.<br \/>\n<code>sudo dd if=[YOUR VERSION OF KALI].iso of=\/dev\/[YOUR DISK NAME] bs=1m<\/code><br \/>\nexample:<br \/>\n<code>sudo dd if=kali-linux-2019.2-amd64.iso of=\/dev\/disk2 bs=1m<\/code><\/p>\n<p><em>Note: Increasing the blocksize (bs) will speed up the write progress, but will also increase the chances of creating a bad USB stick. Using the given value on OS X has produced reliable images consistently.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The dd command provides no feedback until it\u2019s completed so just hold your breath till it&#8217;s done. Well maybe not literally.<br \/>\nOnce dd has finished imaging the drive, it will output something that looks like this.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/bitcows.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Screen-Shot-2019-06-01-at-7.23.22-AM-1024x144.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-1403\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s it! You can now boot into a Kali Live \/ Installer environment using the USB device.
